What Skills Are Needed to Be a Mental Health Counselor?

Before beginning a career as a mental health counselor, it is important to understand the licensure requirements in your state. Many counselors report personal experiences that compelled them to enter this field. These experiences can be beneficial, but they should also be used to build your practice. A graduate degree in psychology is not necessary. The most common degree for mental health counselors is a master’s degree in counseling. However, there are some exceptions.

While education is an important part of becoming a mental health counselor, the skill set required to work in this field is vast. In addition to a solid education, a counselor must also possess excellent communication skills. They must be able to confidently set boundaries, convey their ideas and achieve effective outcomes. Effective communication skills can be learned and honed. A skilled counselor has the ability to communicate with patients and help them develop their own unique coping strategies.

Good mental health counselors need problem-solving skills and creative, out-of-the-box thinking. They are able to address many types of issues, ranging from depression to sexuality. Yet, despite the range of skills needed to be a mental health counselor, not every client will respond to a counselor’s approach. Some clients may require a different approach than others, and some may require additional training to work effectively with them.
